Message from the Dean

dean  Since the Industrial Revolution, mechanization has made great progress, which leads to remarkable progress of manufacturing. It has also led to the revolution of transportation systems such as automobiles, railways and ships, then extraction of resources, production and transport. Because of those advancement, consumption are rapidly grew up beyond borders, which changes people's lives dramatically. Along with this, global environmental issues such as global warming, which is attributed to mass consumption and depletion of fossil fuels and resources, greenhouse gas emissions, etc., as well as regional and economic disparities in various scales are great importance. Meanwhile, the scope of engineering has expanded not only in the conventional field but also in medicine, drug discovery, energy and the environment, disaster prevention and so on. Moreover, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence may change greatly our lifestyle and social structure in the near future.

After 100 years since then, global warming and energy depletion caused by mass consumption are currently the serious problems in our society. Therefore, technology developments related to solar power, wind energy and hybrid vehicles are more active than ever to achieve a sustainable society. The advent of the Internet has completely changed our life style, and now many people own smart phones. Our life now seems impossible without these technologies.

It is true that a major factor to attain successfully the current high position in the world for Japan with a small land and poor resources is pioneering world-class technologies through manufacturing and creating highly reliable products. However, international competition in industrial field is getting severe and cooperation among the primary, the secondary and the tertiary industries is one of important issues even in Japan. Nonetheless, in order to keep economic development not only for Japan but also other countries, it is imperative that manufacturing to create added value is a major industry. As mentioned above, there are strong demands for human resources who are active as top runners of engineering which are still spreading and realize innovation, while having difficulties or challenges.

Nagoya University conducts leading research as a research university located in the agglomeration center of the world's leading manufacturing industries. We are also working on strengthening research capabilities as well as internationalization. Under such circumstances, the Undergraduate/Graduate Schools of Engineering have contributed to the development of technology and engineering in Japan and the world, and the development of human resources active in industry and academia. In 2014, Professor Akasaki and Professor Amano were awarded the Nobel Prize in the development of blue LED for its contribution to energy conservation.

The Undergraduate/Graduate Schools of Engineering of Nagoya University will continue to challenge the various problems facing in the society and produce human resources who can be active as global leaders and contribute to engineering for not only Japan but also the world. We hope to continue to contribute to society by creating high research outcomes.
