What you will study

Acquire a wide breadth of knowledge on electricity!

We conduct research and education across a wide range of fields associated with electricity that supports our life. The department specifically covers the fundamentals of energy and environment, power generation and transmission, electrical equipment or systems, nanotechnology, advanced electronics, devices, computers, communications, and information systems. In the first and second years, students study the basics of electricity through lectures and practical sessions on common fundamental subjects. In the third year, they acquire broader engineering knowledge and perspectives by studying special subjects and conducting experiments in their special fields. In the fourth year, they are engaged in graduation research under the supervision of faculty and senior students in their laboratories, and work on their respective challenging themes that other researchers have either never addressed or solved.

The department has more than 30 laboratories, including the laboratory of Professor Amano, who won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing blue LEDs. We cooperate with several institutes at Nagoya University, including the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability, the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research, and the Plasma Nanotechnology Research Center, as well as some other institutes outside the university, including the National Institute for Fusion Science and overseas research institutes. Through collaborative research under national projects and with domestic and overseas companies, we offer world-leading research environments for electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and information and communication engineering to foster individuals who will take leadership with broad social and global perspectives.

About 90% of our graduates advance to the Master’s course at the Graduate School to acquire higher levels of expertise as well as versatility and application skills associated with electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and information and communication engineering. After completing the Master’s course, some students advance to the Doctoral course at the Graduate School to attain a doctoral degree in engineering, and others find employment in a wide variety of industries including electrical, electronic, and communication equipment, automobiles, machinery and shipbuilding, communications and broadcasting, power and gas, railway and transportation, and precision equipment. We now receive job offers from more than 500 companies every year. Our graduates work as engineers or researchers in more than 70 companies inside and outside the country.

  • Supporting development of advanced information society.

    The data center contains many servers to process information has been a pillar of advanced information society. We proved the effectiveness of ultralarge optical switch for the first time, which makes telecommunication capacity sizeable significantly.

    "Frontier Space pioneer Leader Development Program" has been conducted to foster human resources who can take leadership in companies and research institutes related to space technology. The program provides students the opportunity to listen the lectures on space development, and join the development and planning of satellite projects.

  • Research on innovative medicine with plasma

    We developed the atmospheric-pressure cool plasma device of the highest dense to find out to cause selectively destroy ovarian cancer cells. Collaborating with medical scientists and biologists, we have applied for elucidating the mechanism, and treatment of malignant brain tumors, skin cancer, and regenerative medicine.

The First to Third year/I think that Nagoya University has a culture to respect student’s wishes. The elective courses allow more flexibility. We can study intensively our interest in various field. Some of them have experiments with correct answer because we decide on its theme. I learned widely about electricity to programming, finally became interested particularly in minim semiconductor integrated circuit with 10 billion of element. My current laboratory’s theme of application to medical fields attracted me strongly to chose engineering faculty, because I wanted to contribute to the society with my knowledge in the science.

I handle all process from designing a circuit to make a detecting program.

I won the excellence award of the IEICE poster session with my research that makes possible quickly bacteria test at a hospital or airport.

The Forth year to Graduate school/My research theme is the semiconductor integrated circuit to detect a bacterium. To detect bacterium, first I put the specimen on the integrated circuit chip about one centimeter square.
Next, adding chemicals to cause chemical reaction with electric current, we can specify the type and number of bacterium from the current. I handle all process from the circuit design to measurement and evaluation with trial chip. I presented them at the academic meeting both in Japan and America with my request. To my surprise, I was awarded a prize. My teachers has provided many chances and supported me, if I requested what I want to do. Under favor of them, I have great experiences that I was not expected before entering.
